Raw Recap – Day 7

Today ends my first week of eating raw. I found this week easy to commit to. I also have felt better than I have for a long time. I will continue this way from now on. I am still doing baby steps towards this new lifestyle, and  I am not beating myself up if I decide to have a cooked food.

What I learned this week is there is so much knowledge out there about eating raw. Any question I have I easily find a answer for. The Internet has been very good tool for learning , also the books I purchased. An IT man I know has been transitioning for  the last 3 months. He was so kind  and  dropped off  quite a bit of  information for me. Plus  he  inviting me to a weekend raw workshop/seminar. Not sure if I will attend it.It is going to be held in Irvine this month. But the hours are quite long. Friday is from 6-10, Saturday is from 10 a.m.- 9p.m. and it concludes on Sunday from 10 a.m. -6p.m. It is a lot of hours and it costs $3,000.00 but he will get me in as a guest and there will be no charge to me. That is pretty cool. Though I do not  feel I am able to give up that much time for the session this month, I might be able to attend the October session.

Let me now recap about  my first week of moving towards of being raw.

1. The most important thing I learned is that eating raw does not mean no calories , fat or sugar. It is important to continue to read labels. That being said I know eating raw calories, raw fat, raw carbs and raw sugar is far healthier then  cooked and processed ones. The proof is in the fact is I am still  loosing weight.

2. Which brings me to the next wonderful benefit about eating raw. Though I am probably consuming more calories , I believe I have lost about 5 pounds this week. That is such a great extra benefit.

3. My blood sugars are on their way down. It will be so amazing when my blood sugars are back in the normal range.

4. Knee pain be gone! And  it has been since I have been eating raw. I continue to be so pleased that such improvements are occurring in such a short time. I believe the addition of drinking raw milk this week is what really has improved my arthritis.

5. This past week I have had extra energy and my mental alertness has improved by at least 90%.

I am excited about my raw journey. I awake every morning thrilled to get started on my raw way of life  looking forward to how much better I will feel.

My food intake today:

Breakfast 3 raw falafels with raw Tihani sauce. Lunch: 8 cherries, 8 strawberries and 1 handful blueberries. 1 slice sprouted bread. Dinner: 1/2 Yam and 3 oz steak 1/8 inch thick. Snack: Raw hummus w/1 8 inch flat bread.

Now that my first week has ended and I am closer to that 21 days to developing a good habit I will only be posting about 2-3 times a week.

Raw Milkiness – Day 6

This evening I attended a seminar on Raw Milk at the Mother’s Market in Costa mesa. The speaker was Mark McAfee, of  Organic Pastures Dairy located In Fresno, Ca. It is a family owned and operated dairy. This gentleman was very passionate about raw milk. The knowledge he shared was balanced and not overly self-promoting. I enjoyed what he had to share. I by coincidence had purchased his brand of milk as my first raw milk purchase earlier in the week. If I understood him correctly there are only 2 raw milk producers here in CA. Raw milk has so many health benefits, I am glad I started drinking it.  What I learned foremost tonight is that raw milk is truly a whole food that is not processed. What is great about it is it still contains all of it’s pro-biotic bacteria, folks forget that there are beneficial bacteria that is good for us. Raw milk also has all of it’s enzymes and fats.  What makes it raw is that it has not been oxidized by heat. What made Mark a good representative on the subject of raw milk is his experience also he stressed the importance that not only should we drink raw milk but we need to intake all whole foods.

When I got home this evening I had myself a nice cold glass of raw milk with my first slice of raw pie. Oh it was so delicious made by Nude Foods it was a luscious Pumpkin Spice Cheesecake pie. One must remember just because it is raw does not mean it is calorie free. It was so delicious I ate the whole 5 oz. Only to read the nutritional facts after consuming it. This 5 oz is  2 servings. Which I do not see how 5 oz is nothing and it was only about 2×2 in size. It had 600 calories, 44 grams of fat. 38 carbs. 20sugars and 16grams of those 44 grams of fat were saturated fat.  In the end this just does  not  sound all that healthy to me.  But it has made me more aware that I can not stop label reading just because I am eating raw.

My food recap for the day:

Breakfast : 5 strawberries, 8 cherries and one handful of blueberries. Lunch: 1 slice sprouted bread, 2 oz raw cheddar cheese and 2 oz raw roast. Dinner: 3 small El Pollo Chicken Legs.(I know I was overly hungry on my drive to the seminar.) Baby steps , baby steps.

I decided not to weigh myself every morning. I think that creates such an obsession.  However this morning as I do every morning I have to check my blood sugars. I was shocked to see it had gone up about 20 mg/ul. Don’t know if I may have over done it on the nuts or the cherries. Either way I decided not to have any of the nuts or seeds today. I will test in the morning to see if  my blood sugars are on  the way down again or not.

I feel learning as much as I can about raw milk or any raw food is a reward for me in my journey to a healthier life. I hope those of you who have been following my journey also benefit from the information I post.

Raw Roughness – Day 5

My 5th day has been filled with healthy vegetables and fruits.  I continue to increase those healthy raw foods into my meal plan. With all this fiber I am feeling the cleansing affect. It’s all good that is for sure.  A couple friends made comments saying they felt this way of life would be far to rough for them. But I think with anything in life, if you try it you just might be surprised that things are not as tough and rough as they seem.

No breakfast this morning, not even my Slimfast. I had to go get new brakes on my car, so no time.  When noon came I was ready for my lunch. My stomach was begging for a meal. It consisted of 5 strawberries, 1/2 cup of blueberries, broccoli, nuts and seed and you guessed it, my wonderful raw cheddar cheese and raw roast with a slice of sprouted bread. Dinner was not until about 7:30 so I kept it real light. More broccoli, raw red cabbage and a raw sausage made of all sorts of healthy raw ingredients.

Remember I was concerned about my blood sugars being high this morning because of reintroducing fruit in to my meals? Surprise, my blood sugars continue to go down. This morning my blood sugars were down another 36mg/ul. I also lost an additional 2 pounds.  When I see the changes already taking place , no way do I feel this is a rough way of living. When it does get rough I know I will be up for that challenge and I will continue to make the healthy raw choices.

I just really need to start implementing these recipes I have . I promise myself to get to Whole Foods Market next week,unless of course I go over to Vegas for a few days.  If I do I will have to at least have fruits packed for the drive over. I can find a raw food restaurant there with no problem for my meals. And if worse comes to worse I can play it safe and make the healthy choices at the buffets. Now a days all places offer such healthy choices at their buffets. I do not even fear the temptation of any bad choices. Int his short time I continue to feel better everyday.

While my brakes were being installed I continued to read “The Complete Idiot’s Guide To Raw Eating”  I am on chapter 5 which is in perfect time, since it is about the Perfect Pantry. It is full of all sorts of advice about food handling and storage, vegetables, nuts & seeds grains & legumes, herbs, spices ,vinegars, oils, salt and other condiments. So much information to retain before I go shopping.

What is nice about “The Complete Idiot’s Guide To Raw Eating , is the additional side info they share with your. For example they have the “raw deal” which are alerts to certain warnings that a raw foodist need to be aware of. I have highlighted those as I read. It also has a “tasteful tip” this is where they share tips and tricks in being a raw foodist. There is also a side extra called “healing foods” these side boxes explain the how and why plants heal. And the last side box throughout this book is called “definition” which is a feature that explains new words in regards to raw foods and their meanings.  Yes a great book indeed I highly recommend it for anyone who want to education themselves on raw food eating.

And so this has been day 5, on to day 6.

If I go to Vegas and if I do loose a bit of money, I will remember that…………………..

Reveling In Rawness – Day 4

Today was uneventful in the respect that eating raw has so easily become an adaptable way of life for me. No other “diet” has ever seemed like it was second nature. I starting thinking about this and I believe the easiness is because I have always preferred my foods cold anyway. Everyone basically likes cold pizza, but I have been one who waits for my food to cool down before I important t is that I am looking at this as a lifestyle and not a diet.

Through my reading I have learned as long as you do not prepare anything above 116 -118 F it is still considered raw. This is nice to know if and when I do miss a warm food.

Today I introduced fruits into my raw food plan. I usually stay away from fruit because of the high glycemic index it usually has.  But as I read the “Complete Idiot’s Guide to Eating Raw” their explanation of the importance to include fruits is to assure I will be getting all the vitamins and minerals that my body needs  I will have to be careful in my choice of fruits and stick to the low glycemic selections. I have always been aware of the 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables,but because of the sugar in the fruits I have avoided them most of the time. I guess it is time to bring the fruits back into my life. I have no doubt my blood sugars will be higher tomorrow, but as my system adjusts to the fruit hopefully it will drop back down.

Breakfast today was 4 ounces of Slimfast (I usually have the recommended 8 ounces.)

Lunch consisted of my yummy raw cheddar cheese and raw roast with 1 slice of sprouted bread.

I had a snack today of raw Brazil nuts and raw silvered almond. Fiber , fiber, fiber !

Dinner consisted of spinach sold, cabbage roll, raw broccoli, 5 strawberries and 5 cherries.

It is hard for me to believe I am actually full. I also had another 1 pound loss. According to my reading, with all the fiber and water in what I am eating is the reason I am loosing the weight. I think it will slow down and what I am loosing now is the excess water in my system.

One thing is certain; I do need to start using some of these wonderful recipes in all 3 books that I purchased. I want to make sure I do not bore of the foods and the only way to do that is to start preparing others foods. I think next week will be the first chance I get to go over to Whole Foods and get my grocery shopping done. Thursday evening after the seminar at Mother’s Market I will pick up a few items to get me through until I decide on my menu choices.

Today has me feeling I am reveling in rawness and wow is it a great feeling.

What I have noticed after 4 day are my legs . They do not look as swollen as they often do after a day of being on my feet. Most people have their ankles swell, not me my calf area swells. Weird I know but that is how it has been for a while. I also continue to have more energy each day. Sure can’t complain  about that, considering I am basically the  lethargic type. This new found energy is something I am embracing to the fullest.

Something new for me is I did buy my large diet coke today and here it is 9:20 in the evening and there is still half of it left. That is so amazing to me. I usually can drink anywhere  from 2-3 glasses a day. Not sure why I have not drank it all and really need to trash , the ice melted ions ago. Yesterday I had about 1/4 of it left. Maybe the desire is leaving me  to have my usual fix.  I will see how it goes tomorrow and dare I brave it and only buy a medium?

It is time for me to relax now and continue my education on raw foods. Raw Rewards – Day 3

I am surprised how this new lifestyle has been for me in the last 3 days. Sure I am not 100% raw, however today I did eat all raw. The only intake of bad choices was my diet coke. I did not even have my Slimfast for breakfast because surprisingly enough I was not even hungry.

For lunch I had a raw casserole made by Good Mood Foods  out of San Diego, CA. It was one of the items I purchased at Mother’s Market.

Today I went to Henry’s Farmers Market, since they have so much organic foods I wanted to see how they were stocked in the raw foods department. They do have a nice organic produce area, but for raw deli items I could not locate a one. I also could not locate a store clerk to answer my question  if they did have any raw deli items that perhaps I just did not see. I did mange to buy an assortment of raw nuts and also my first ever half gallon of raw milk, which was delicious and I am not a big milk drinker.Thursday night Mother’s Market is having a seminar on Raw Milk which I will be attending. It is fun educating myself and slowly interacted with other raw foodist as we seem to be called. I will report back on the seminar after I have attended it.

Dinner was a light spinach salad and 2 slices of that wonderful raw cheddar cheese. I still can not believe it is the best I ever had. I also had a slice of the raw “roast”.

Eating raw is already bringing a difference to my life, I consider that a great reward. I lost another pound that always  makes me happy. The biggest reward though is seeing my blood sugar going down and I actually felt better today I had more energy than I have had in a long time.

Tonight I am beginning my second book called  “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Eating Raw” by Mark Reinfeld, Bo Rinaldi and Jennifer Murray,  personally I do not feel I am an idiot, but these Idiot series along with the Dummy series have always proven to be for me decent books with worthy information. I am hoping this book proves to be the same.

The thought is to pick up any habit it takes 21 days, I guess I have 18 more to go. So as to not create boredom with my readers I will probably blog for the first week everyday about this new way of life and after the first week I will check in at least 1-2 times a week.

But always even when I am not blogging I am working towards a life of more raw foods each day. Baby steps, baby steps. Until tomorrow keep in mind that………………………

Raw Discoveries –Day 2

One thing that is certain to eat healthy is far more expensive than your cheap drive-thru restaurants.

I completed Carol Alts book entitled “Eating in the Raw” I am glad I read if only for the reason she does emphasizes the philosophy of starting gradually. It was nice to read that it enforces my approach and makes me feel better about it.

Back to the finances of eating raw, I am hoping it balances itself out with the fact I will be using far less house gas and far less electricity. Currently I have none of the kitchen appliances she speaks of, personally I am not sure I even  will have a great need to purchase any of these right away. I do have a Kitchen- Aid  Food Processor  and I feel that will do for now.

Upon waking this morning I was pleased when I tested my blood sugar and it had dropped by 59mg/ul that is a start, however I definitely have a long way to go in that department. My weight was down 2 lbs from yesterday. I conclude all in all a positive start to my new way of life.

One of my common sense discoveries about eating raw is when purchasing raw entries as I did yesterday, it is helpful to keep a notebook to keep track of the brands I try. I am also putting a little note by the brand name after I have eaten it. This way I will know which I liked and did not like.

A great example is this morning for breakfast  I decided to have raw falafels and raw sauce from amongst the selection I bought yesterday. I gagged when I put this certain brand in my mouth the taste was just horrid and oh yuck I  felt I was eating sand.The sauce was way too vinegary. These went into the trash. I usually do not waste like that,and even more so being that their cost was $6.39 for a package of 4. Having mentioned the price that gives you an idea of how bad they were. Hence my discovery is all future purchases of falafels will include the Back To Life brand not the other. Their raw falafels were smooth and tasted similar to flash fried falafels from one of my favorite Greek fast foods restaurant. Also Back To Life’s raw “Tihini” sauce actually tasted how regular Tihini tastes.

I need to find time and get over to Whole Foods; I believe if I remember correctly their prices use to be a little lower than Mother’s. But I do need to comparison shop and get to know the raw foods at both Mother’s and Whole Foods better.

My lunch consisted of a cabbage casserole I made. It was a cooked meal and I included my raw salad.  My dinner was a slice of  sprouted bread that I keep in the freezer so it takes true to itself. I thawed the bread naturally only took a minute or two with this heat. I then placed a slice of  raw cheddar cheese and  a slice of  the raw “roast ‘  with a few sprigs of raw spinach and tomatoes.

This raw cheese is the most wonderful cheddar I have ever had. And I have had a  lot of cheddar in my life. I am so amazed it is so remarkable tasteful. I will have to be careful with product I could see myself  just munching that in no time.The raw “roast” is made with lentils beans and I am also surprised how delicious it is too.

I am looking forward to discovering more brands and different raw foods. Next stop visiting other blog site on others who have chosen this lifestyle of raw eating.

Raw and Ripe – Day 1

It is the day’s end for me and I am proud to say I made it through a 90% raw food day.

I woke up this morning thinking of all the foods I would not be able to eat today. I threw those thoughts out of my mind quickly and decided to focus on how I would be eating healthy today. My body will be thanking me.

Breakfast was not a raw meal for me I had my Slimfast powdered breakfast, I will continue to have this for breakfast until the tin is empty. Maybe not the healthiest of drinks , but it really is a satisfying full feeling after I have my drink.

Lunch time I became a grazer, eating grape tomatoes, broccoli, celery and carrots all raw of course.  Around 3:00 I was really feeling my stomach yelling at me for feeding such a diet to it. I knew I had to put something in it to get it to shut up. I drove to Fountain Valley to dine at Au Lac Vegetarian  Restaurant. They have a lovely raw food menu. However they keep odd hours. They actually close at 3:33 p.m. I arrived at 3:28 so I did not bother to go in. They re-open at 5:33 (the :33 must be some sort of cultural thing) I didn’t feel like hanging around Fountain Valley until 5:33 so I headed over to Mother’s Market & Kitchen .  I am glad I did. Though their restaurant did not have a raw food section, the hostess did walk me over to their very small raw food deli. And there I was able to grab some of my favorites.(Old food way) I made a selection of the new way foods. A couple packages of raw falafel, raw cheese, raw “Roast” loaf  and a raw vegetarian casserole.

I had 3 of the Falafel as I drove home , they came with a raw dressing and they were very good. I look forward to trying other items soon.

Mother’s Market, usually gets a bad wrap ,yes they are  way overpriced and always crowded. And it is difficult to shop because they offer so much it is not easy to always find what you are looking for. But I like the people, they are full of knowledge about any way of life you are attempting and their Costa Mesa store always has a calendar of events going on, which I do plan on attending several of them in the very near future. I am also pleased they will be opening a Mother’s Market on August 4-5 in Anaheim Hills. That will be  far more convenient for me.

Dinner was 2 slices of sprouted bread with the raw cheese and raw “roast” slices with a tomato and a spinach salad, all very enjoyable and I do feel full.

However there was one bad moment when I did indulge in one cookie and cream dark chocolate cone drumstick. Yeah I know it was not raw. But I am not going to beat myself up for it because I am doing this in baby steps. And that one bad item does not compare to all the good choices I made today.

I even managed to not even drink all of my diet coke drink today Usually I finish that and even have another.  Diet coke is one of my addictions and I will be ridding myself of that all in due time.

One disappointment I did have is when I got home I took my blood sugar feeling confident it would be near normal. I was really disappointing to see it at it’s high side. I personally think it was all the carrots I ate, they have always converted quickly into sugar in my system.  I will research this evening to see what had so many carbs in it to still have a high reading. But the morning will be the real verdict of how my sugar is doing. The more carbs I eat during the day the higher it is in the morning. And yes veggies and raw foods do have carbs but they usually digest slowly and are good carbs. Sure the drumstick has carbs too but I didn’t eat that until much later. I will just wait until the morning reading to decide what adjustments I must make.

Tomorrow is another day. I will continue to read Carol Alts book. It is really a good book if you look beyond her self-promotion of purchasing items through her site.
